The Western Electric Model 554 was the wall phone version of the Model 50. These were made from the 1950s until the 1980s. This one is hardwired so it is one of the earlier models. It would spot in the house where the wire came out and that is where the phone would be.
Even though it was hard wired to the wall it seems it could have been removed from the wall just a bit.. At some point in the life of this phone someone decided to repaint and there was a lot of paint along one side and the top of the bottom of the phone. The paint wasn't coming off so I let it sit in just a tiny bit of paint thinner for two minutes. The paint came off but so did some of the plastic of which the phone was made. Still have some on one of my fingernails. Photo #2 shows the damaged area.
At least I got rid of the paint and aside from looking a bit too glossy the one side does not look so bad.

Reminds me of a party line my parents were on years ago. I think there were 4 different rings.

We had one of these when I was growing up. And yes, we too were on a party line with two other families. What a pain that was!!!!

Grew up with that exact phone. But in the city (NY) I never experienced party lines.
      Cool phone.

Like @clockerman, we had our own private line in San Jose, California. Our desktop model was an "old" black rotary phone and our wall phone in the kitchen was a lime-colored "new" model with a push-button pad. [;>)

Thank you very much NevadaBlades. Your rotary phone was likely a Model 500.
