This is probably for miso soup. it's 4.5" across by 2" tall. i found it at Goodwill today. Doesn't look very old, but it's hard to tell w/ porcelain.

Just FYI: "Chawan", which is made of porcelain, is for "gohan" or rice. "Owan", which is made of plastic or wood and then covered with lacquer, is for "misoshiru" or miso soup. The Owan is also shaped rounder, like a western-made soup bowl, than the triangular-shaped Chawan. [;>)
thank you Nevada. i did not know that!
Hi ho2cultcha,
Good day to you. I have a similar bowl but in green and blue with the same Japanese marking. I have however been unable to decode the marking apart from the lower letter , "ZAN". Zan a commonly used Japanese marking can mean "mountain" but is often found to be within the name of the maker, for example Gyo zan or Ko zan. The first marking will help determine name of the maker. I shall be very grateful if you could kindly share the information regarding the mark, if known. Thanks in advance.
