My husband inherited this piece just a couple of years ago, but can’t find anything about it, or how his aunt acquired it. It appears to be written in Russian and I googled what I thought would be a close to an English translation and found Kunashiri Island. I found out that Russia took over a small island with this name in the 18th century, which had belonged to Japan.
I may be barking up the wrong tree but the decoration does have a Japanese influence. I am not suggesting this is old, but really need help with the translation and the maker’s mark, as I have come up empty handed !
    Anyone read Russian?

AnnaB may be able to help Mary. She translated the Russian on my bronze enamel St. George icon the other day. :)

      Semikarakorsk faience factory ``Aksinia``
(I think it started the production in 70` 20 century).Your napkin holder is modern production.

Maryh1956's I wasn't sure how to get a comment to you. You just commented on my post of the Japanese vase. I loaded a new picture and was wondering if you could tell anything from it. Thanks the link is http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/209535-japanese-vase-markings#comment-990668

      IVAN49 is correct - it's a napkin holder not a letter holder.
