I found this letter written from Spain by a man named Antonio Calvet (could be incorrect on the last name). I posted the signature from the letter. In the letter he mentioned serving as secretary and treasurer for Mr. Martinez Canyros(?), who was then replaced by General Weyler. The letter mentions the war with Cuba and joining the rebellion on behalf of the republic. The author of the letter also smuggled his fortune of 36,000 pounds sterling out of Spain to England, but he was arrested and imprisoned for 18 years when he returned to Spain. No word on what he was arrested for but the sentence makes it seem like he was someone important in the affairs between Cuba and Spain. He could only send the letter through a priest at the castle he was imprisoned at (referred to as his "confidential man") as he was not allowed any sort of correspondence with the public. Who was Antonio Calvet and what rebellion is he speaking of?
