Good morning all, what are your opinions on this recent purchase, it is a large chest/trunk looks like its made of Oak? its 37" x 18" x 16"

Peter I think this is made from camphorwood and if you open it and have a sniff it should still have a feint camphor odour. These became quite popular in the West as blanket and clothing storage trunks from about 1900 and remained popular into the 1950s.
When you open it does it have a tray on one side as well? That would date it to about pre WW2.
They are beautiful hand carved pieces and this one is fantastic with it's dragons.

These are very popular souvenir items from the orient. They are often found in family effects of soldiers who did occupation duty/ post WW2 duty in Japan.
