    I should have taken a picture of this item with a light shining behind it because the negative bas relief carved into it becomes a fully dimensional scene in front of a light. It is a beautiful picture, I think religious, maybe of Mary holding her child. I have never seen one of these and I wish I could remember what my mother told me about it. I have always loved it.
    Any info would be greatly appreciated!
    I don't even know how to categorize it!

      This technique is called lithophane!
      Your beautiful mount and plaque seems to be from 19th century, and displayed in front of a candle stick to show the scene :-)
