This is a poster paint pot from Tesuque Pueblo, New Mexico. Two tribes, Tesuque and Jemez, made similar inexpensive souvenir items, decorated with poster paint (and later acrylic paint, when it became available) starting around the 1930s. This probably dates circa 1950.

It looks like someone added a coat of varnish or some other type of coating, in an effort to prevent the poster paint from smearing and rubbing off, which resulted instead in the chipping off of the finish.

Poster paint pots have always been at the bottom level of pueblo pottery, when it comes to collectible value, although a few years ago there was a rumor that a book devoted to the subject was in the works, which was thought might have an effect on the market for them. As far as I know, the book hasn't materialized yet, nor has the market improved much for the pots. But they do have a certain almost folk art appeal, in their imaginative use of vibrant colors.
