    This brooch looks to be handmade. It has a Pat. #206695 on the back. When I looked up the patent number it said it was made in 1878...can someone confirm that. Thanks!

      If Google Patent search did not bring results, perhaps one or more digits at the end have worn off completely or else been poorly stamped, and we now see an incomplete number. Wear can also change the look of some digits, i.e. an 8 can look like 6 or O etc.

      Also, that patent is not for the design of the brooch but a utility patent for the fastening mechanism or one of its parts. The same mechanism could be in use for many years but I highly doubt it's as old as 1878, I would date it around 1920s-30s.

      Is the the patent number for the clip at the back **only **. I would imagine they might have a patent number themselves these back clips......
