Hello collector friends!!!
This is a 1950's Tress & Co. London made silk top hat. The hat contains the United Kingdom coat of arms inside. The hat is covered in rabbit felt and still has quite a shine to it.
The hat is in minty condition and still has its' original box. The original owner wrote his name on the bottom of the box, B.P. Colton, Portland #1 1954-55. I believe this gentleman must have been a member of the Deering Lodge No. 183 in Portland (Woodfords) Maine and evidently wore this hat during lodge meetings. I say this because there is a Deering Lodge No. 183 pamphlet inside the hat box.
B.P. Colton does not appear to have been a Master at this Deering Lodge No. 183. The pamphlet list all past Masters thru 1963 and his name is not listed.
Thanks for stopping to have a look!!
Scott
I had no idea these were still made in the 1950's. Great hat by the way, always nice to have the original box.
Thanks Pops!!
Actually, you can still get a new top hat this very day. However, they're now made of wool or in a collapsible version made of polyester silk. Thanks for the appreciation and for always taking the time to stop in. I do appreciate it Pops!!

Thanks very much for the appreciation and for stopping in to check out my top hat. Very greatly appreciated!!!
I never knew top hats was still in vogue in the nineteen-fifties Scott. Oh those stylish Europeans. LOL
Rick,
Yep, those Europeans are very stylish and sophisticated!! But, since the UK passed their vote recently, I don't think we can call them European any longer. Or, can we? I do believe it's still sort of a custom to wear a grey top hat to a wedding in England, but I may be wrong about that. You can get a wool or polyester silk top hat very reasonable today. However, ti's the old silk top hats that are in premium condition that still bring top dollar. Thanks for the appreciation and for stopping in. Very greatly appreciated!
