This Bernard Instone brooch was given to me, as a gift, which of course I was over the moon. Looking at the markings it is marked B.I and a Birmingham hallmark and p for the year 1964. Bernard Instone retired in 1963, so this brooch was made when his sons were in charge of the company. In my personal opinion it isn't a patch on their fathers work. I'm going to look through my pieces and try and get some in chronological order, so you can see the changes from the 1920s up to the 1960s when his sons took over the business. Never the less this brooch does have some charm, it certainly looks to be a very 60s piece.
    Many thanks for looking

It is certainly different Judy. If it wouldn't have marked there is no way I would have said it was a B.I brooch. Thanks for your comment.

      Hi,

I wouldn't id this as a Bernard Instone brooch. It is very different in style - I don't think they set out to copy their father's work, even if they tried it just wouldn't work and they knew that?

Makes me wonder how many pieces have been made by his sons - would they have marked their work using BI as well? If I'm correct Barnard didn't sign all his pieces.

It is a very lovely silver brooch, are they oak leaves, I think they are? I'd really appreciate it if you were able to sort your brooches by date, that would add to my knowledge so much.

Ahhh, thank you nutsabotas, I do have to say the leaves are very nice certainly not in the style of their father.

Hi Gillian, you might find this post of mine of interest. The brooch is a later piece the same as this. After their father left they still used B.I

I do think the leaves on this brooch are from a Oak tree. I shall try to get around to Putting a collection together of brooches from different time periods.

Yet again thank you Gillian for showing a interest in my posts, it's much appreciated.
