Update: See picture in book. Mine is not signed- does that reduce its value? Could mine be a fake piece?
Original post: This brooch was given to me by my grandmother. She received it in the 1940's in Chicago, Il. It's a very large piece (over 4") with some weight to it, so it must have been worn on a heavy jacket. I've always had a feeling about the brooch, so I have held on to it. If anyone has any idea about it's history, the designer or value, I would appreciate your insight greatly.

I'm not sure how to tell. The stones are cold to the touch.

How do you tell if it's bronze? I only know how to test for gold.
I can see I have much to learn about vintage jewelry. Help.
Photos could alter the appearance of color, try searching online images for comparison but mind there is "antique bronze finish", that's different and used a lot in modern costume pieces as well as "antique brass". Anyway, bronze is rarely used as setting for stones but see what you can find and keep us posted.

There may be, but you'll see after a while that its color is unlike other metals and the weight, and I don't usually see very thin strips of bronze since it's more brittle, so bronze jewelry has some "mass" to it.
