    Hello everyone.

A recent purchase from Ebay, listed as opal and filigree brooch. Got it for the opening bid of $125.00....very happy with that!!

Have searched everywhere I can think of to find anything like this pattern of not really "leaves"....look a bit like hearts I think on some areas. I think it would have to be Arts and Crafts 1930s or so....maker unknown as usual lol!!! Perhaps Jean or Jewels1900 or Paul or anyone else might recognize the pattern.

I am guessing the opal may be a Whitecliffs one with that streaky looking back.....like my other brooch. Hopefully Kiwipaul might come by and have a look.

The whole brooch top to bottom measures two and a half inches.
The opal measures approx half an inch wide.

I think it is really beautiful, hope you do too. Thanks, Judy
UPDATE: White Cliffs Doublet confirmed by Kiwipaul.

Ohhhh, what a beauty, I love everything about it. In my opinion it looks to be Australian, with the opal and the leave and frame work. What a wonderful buy. I'm sure you'll get some answers, Judy.

You never know it could be Rhoda or Dorothy Wager. I supposed it's not marked?
    3. martika martika, 8 years ago
      It looks stunning!!!

Hi Jean, thank you....glad you love it, and think it is Australian!!
No marks at all that I could see unfortunately!!! We have so many unknown maker's between us all don't we, and probably still more out there to be had!!!
Thanks for the lovely comment and do really appreciate your help Jean!

Thank you Martika for the lovely comment, I really do appreciate it and yes, it's pretty special I think!!

Very beautiful Judy and great find from Ebay!
I hope those who know can help with attribution. It's a beautiful opal and lovely silver work!
    7. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Thanks Karen....I couldn't believe no one else was interested in it......so lucky!
Yes, such a lot of work goes into these pieces, a shame that the maker's can't be recognized for their efforts!!

Wooooh, Judy! Incredible bargain find! The opal is so colorful! And consequent size :-)
You may check the opal setting, it appear to be a gap beetween stone and silver.
    9. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Hi Kyra, thank you. yes it has got beautiful colours.
Thanks for reminding me of the link you gave me for the triplet. Just found my magnifying glass with the really bright light built into it and have been peering into those gaps.......have almost gone blind lol!! Still not sure what I am looking for though. When they say a dome over the top do they mean an actual dome shape?? because this opal feels as flat as a tack!!
    10. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Judy, I was not thinking a triplet, but the security of the setting :-)
Having never handled a triplet, I can't say how high is their dome... only it must look like a cabochon.
    11. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Pascale thank goodness you are on the ball!!! I didn't even think that it might not be secure!!!! And I haven't handled enough to know anything about opals LOL.
I really do appreciate your help though, thank you!!!
I was just watching your new puppies!!!! How cute are they!!! What type are they??

      You're very welcome Judy!

Fleafinder, these are filigree brooches that Martika has, nothing like mine....that was just what the seller called mine.

A benevolent remark: search for the difference between solid opal, doublet and triplet opals. Doublets and triplets are dark in body tone because they have a black artificial backing to create the impression of ``fire opal``. In doublets one of the layers is very thin slice of opal attached to the dark artificial backing. It`s difficult to tell when the opal is fully set, i.e. closed within the setting and its sides cannot be examined for distinct visible 'layers'. The rule of thumb: never buy opals with dark backing, real opal should be transparent.

Hello Ivan, thanks very much for your advice and information. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain these opals to me....I find them very confusing as I haven't seen or handled enough to be confident with them at all! Be assured though that I will continue to try to learn!

Thanks again for your help. Kind regards, Judy

Take a look here. (Zoom in the image). Note how transparent opals are.

Ivan, Gilson opals are another area...synthetic...
    23. IVAN49 IVAN49, 8 years ago
Could not find better example to show the transparency. Sellers of jewelry seldom take images from different angles.

Hi Tassie, a great score at the at price.

Yes definitely a doublet, the flat top and splotchy backing of opal potch is the give away. I'd say 1930's White Cliffs opal, similar to this: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/165795

I've seen those intricate wire-work pieces before, it's very effective, from one of the unknown Australian Arts & Crafts silversmiths, probably from Sydney circa 1930's to 40's.
    29. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Hi Kiwi, thanks very much for the confirmation on the opal and time frame. Very happy to have two White Cliffs opals now!!
I really like these pieces, so much work goes into them!! Such a pity the maker has to go unknown .......
Thanks again, really appreciate your help.

Hi Tassie, agree with Paul, probably from the 40's. Not Wager but still very nice work.

I've seen this heart shaped leaf before but don't know who made it.
