Hello. This little clock belonged to my late mother who lived in Canada all her life, but it is now with me in England. The New Haven clock mechanism is set into glass measuring 6 x 6 x 3/16 inches and each side of the glass is decorated with a twisted glass rod (about 6/16 of an inch in diameter) held in place by metal corners decorated by a metal "leaf". I think the metal is brass but it's quite tarnished. The mechanism isn't currently working, there is a small glass chip in one corner and it is a little grubby in the corners. I'd like to clean and polish it but am worried about damaging it. I am very fond of the clock and do not want to part with it, but I wonder if anyone knows when and where it was made, about the history and design etc. I also would be grateful for any restoration tips. Thank you.

Just to add to some of the excellent info antiquerose has already provided, I would tend to categorize this type of clock as a "Boudoir", "Dresser" or possibly a "Novelty" clock.

Here are some additional examples which appear to use the same type of movement that your clock has with very different ornamentation.

Hope that helps a little. Thanks for sharing your clock with us.

I'm not sure if this is how I write to thank 'antique rose' and 'Bruce 99' for their very kind and most helpful comments about my clock. I am very appreciative of the time taken to respond, and found the information they sent to me very interesting and informative. I was also delighted to see the pictures of similar (and very charming) clocks . Thank you also to those who "loved" the clock. I stumbled upon the Collectors Weekly site, and am so pleased to have found it.
