This is an odd japanese teapot w/ a double-wall both on the cover and in the body. it's completely hand-built and either has seen a lot of use or is older than it looks. nice crackle glaze as well as some raku-type work.

thank you melaniej and jscotto! apparently, those cutout hearts are actually supposed to represent horse's hooves!

Not so uncommon in Japan. Wife's mother had a few, all thrown out with the trash at her passing several years ago now. My mother, in fact, sold these in her Japanese gift shop in San Jose, California from 1966 to 1988 (when she retired). I took 3 from her left-over inventory a few years ago during a visit home, and sold them on eBay. Wish now I would have kept one of them. I think I saw some new one at the International Market here in Vegas the last couple of times we were there grocery shopping for Japanese food. [;>)

apparently the heart-shaped cutouts represent horse's hooves on this traditional design. the somayaki kilns were all destroyed in the 2011 earthquake and will not be reopened from what i heard. very sad.

I had a whole set of these including a teapot which was bigger than the one pictured and 4 of the teacups. It came from my grandmother. I recently gifted it to our nephew that is interested in tea.
