Hello everyone.
My husband bought this ring with some tools from a local garage sale 3 years ago, so this ring cost $1.25.
He handed me a box when he came home and said he didn't think it was anything special but it was pretty. He also said he didn't take it out of the box to have a good look at it either so hoped it wasn't broken or anything.
Of course when I opened the box and looked I could see immediately that it was a quality piece and said so....and promptly showed him the hallmark!! He was, to quote "stuffed and amazed"!!!! Needless to say, so was I!!!
It is hallmarked 9ct, with a rose gold shank, with the stones, which I believe are sapphires, and the pearl, set in white gold (I think) and the shoulders nicely etched in white gold too.
The back of this ring is really curious....I have not seen anything like this before! While the sapphires have been left with open backs to let the light in, the pearl appears to have been covered over with some sort of wax type material!! Has anyone seen this before???
I am thinking Art Deco perhaps for a time period.....??
My husband earned lots of brownie points for this one!!!
Hope you enjoy this ring and the story! Thanks, Judy
UPDATE: Have had the pearl and glue removed and new CZ stone put in......I love it !!!!!!
Nice husband. :) Hopefully you know who will know. :)
It's lovely.
Thank you OGF......yes he is, and yes it is!!
That is a beautiful ring her scored for you! I will be interested to know what others think is behind the pearl. Glue?
Are you sure I can't borrow him?
Thanks Karen, he did do very well with this one!!!
The back of the pearl is curious isn't it....I hope someone will know too!! Just looking at the pearl again, I can see a little bit of glue or something in the claw area....maybe the pearl is not original to it and has just been glued in? although the claws do look like they have never been disturbed.....
LOL and yes I am sure!!
Thanks Thomas, you are exactly right....that is why we all keep looking!!!
Wow, your hubby did good. Great ring and great story!!!
It certainly was Ken, and thank you for the lovely comment.
Thanks Scott, glad you have enjoyed this post....pretty amazing!
Can't go wrong for that money!! I have not a clue about your waxy stuff behind the pearl. Maybe kyra will know.
Thanks Bonnie!
What a find, and a bargain! Does your hubby share some DNA with Bonnie??? ;-D
Never seen this "crown" mounting for pearl... For the back, maybe someone secured the pearl with a kind of glue...
Usual old pearl fixation was made with a mix of plaster and animal (collagen)glue. But this mixture (used too to assemble crystal and silver for vases, etc) dissolves in warm water!
Is the shank the same color all around the inside or is there difference?
Very nice!
Hi Pascale, lol sometimes he seems to!!!
Funny you should say that about the pearl, I have thought that myself about the setting in the crown! I am not overly happy with the way it sits up so high, just doesn't look the right proportion for the ring or something!!!
Interesting the mixture for the glue......do you think it would be ok to soak the ring in warm water and see if I can get that backing out and then try to take the pearl out???? I would really like to have a stone set down in those prongs, would look much nicer I think.
Davyd, the shank is the same rose gold on the inside right up to the notches you can see in picture 3 where it turns into white gold outside and inside. Hope I have explained this well enough.....
Thanks very much Freiheit!!
Many thanks OneGoodFind, Karen, fleafinder, Vetraio, Thomas, Ken, Scott, Caperkid, Aura, Bonnie, Pascale, Melanie, Jean and Sean, always appreciate the love, thank you everyone!
Judy, as you I don't like high rings!
A stone sitting lower than the pearl should be beautiful :-)
You may try a long stay in warm water and gentle scratch the "glue" to see if it melt.
Thanks very much Pascale for your great help.....I will give this a try.....if it doesn't work I will take it to a jeweller and get them to remove the backing and the pearl and put something nice in. Only paying next to nothing for it I think I can spend a little on it to at least make it better hey!
Thanks again!!!
No need to thank, Judy, it's my pleasure :-)
You will get an even nicer ring!
The pearl is a keeper too, what size is it?
Pascale the pearl measures approx 6.6mm. Any suggestions of what colour stone might look good with the blue of the sapphires?
Many thanks for the love Nevada, always appreciated!
Traditionally, the ring would have a clear stone in the middle but if you'd like to "modernize" it, an unexpected color combo, e.g. blue and green or even orange may turn out striking.
Judy, be sure to repost the ring after it's been "updated"!
Thanks Davyd, much appreciated!
Bonnie, yes I will, getting a bit excited with that now!

Hi there,
In post 36 you say "Hi everyone, have updated the ring pictures here.........hope you like it!!!!" Unfortunately I can't seem to find the updated pictures, or post.
Do you know where it is? I would love to see what the new stone looks like. It's a beautiful ring, and I'm not sure if I would like a ring with such a high set stone/jewel.
Really like the shank design - and saphire(?) setting.
