I am unsure of where this pottery originated from and I only know that it was found in Pennsylvania. I have searched through many images on google and I think the bird may be a parrot, but I have gathered little else on the design. It is heavy material, terracotta colored on the inside, and its about a foot tall. If anyone has an idea of the origin of this design or its authenticity please post I am very curious to know its history.
No marks of any kind the base?
It’s beautiful! I think the bird is a water bird, possibly a Loon- on top of the water with it’s reflection showing beneath it. I don’t know where you live, but I’m guessing this is Native American, so I would find a museum or historical society locally who could help you identify it.
Not Native American, no Native American Indian tribe makes anything like this style of pottery. Colors, maybe, like orange/black/white, are similar to those used by some southwest tribes. But this was thrown on a potter's wheel, and no traditional Native American pottery was ever thrown on a wheel.
This was also fired in an electric kiln, indicating it's contemporary.
I'd suggest checking out Venezuela as a possibility. The colors are right, as is the banded decoration, and that fine-line black decoration and solid red circles are common motifs in pottery from Quibor, Lara, Venezuela.
Thanks for sharing this info CanyonRoad, I learned a lot
