Trying to save money, so have not been going antiquing lately but wanted to put in the day so went to the Christie Lake antique show to look around. Most items there are pretty pricey so I figured I wouldnt see anything I would buy but I guessed wrong. Saw this sign and couldnt go home without it. Hard to find Canadian sign made 1939 fairly good condition. main issue with this sign is someone at some point in time decided to put varnish all over the sign. its starting to peel off, not sure if i should try to clean the rest off or just leave it as is. Either way very happy to own this sign been wanting one for years.
I wonder if they used varnish because they displayed it outside and didn't want it to rust. No matter it's a great sign.
Great score Trev, very nice sign, and I'm sure that the varnish can be removed.
thanks for the loves, not sure why someone would varnish a porcelain sign to prevent rust, but wondering if anyone has a safe way to remove the varnish without damaging the sign.
coke.trevor.cola, any paint stripper would remove the clear coat and not hurt the porcelain..BUT.. this sign might have been touched up with paint and then shot with clear so be careful.
Looks Super Trevor!
