So when people think about chalkware, they usually think cheap plaster goods with chipped paint. But in reality, the pieces are often quite nicely modeled and beautifully painted with some care, whether it's a bust of a beautiful woman or a wall hanging wreath of fruit. I was prodded into observing there was a difference in quality of chalkware when I compared the horse in the photos above to other pieces I own and have seen posted here and while researching. This horse is probably what is really meant when we say chalkware carnival prize. Straight out of a mold, back is bare white plaster, spray painted dark green at the base, a dark red for the figure of the horse, then touched with black at the eye, and last some gold touches on the hooves, tail, mane, and bridle for a bit of shine, to be given away as a carnival or amusement park prize. 7" x 7", no marks. I don't rightly know what attracted me at the moment of purchase except that I like chalkware generally, and I could see this one was truly vintage. It's when I got to looking at him that I really began to appreciate him. He is posed beautifully, the lovely mane and tail, the neck and legs, the face and eye, a proud handsome fellow. He completely won me over. A keeper. I hope you enjoyed seeing him, and thanks for looking.

Clearly it's been a prized possession too Katherine to still be in such good nick.
I wonder who won it, and where they kept it? Did it have an emotional meaning (first boyfriend gift? Mum gave it to me?)
The colours shout the era too.

Thanks for the love, vetraio50, aura, Efesgirl, jscott0363, racer4four, and NevadaBlades. :)

Karen, if only this little horse could talk. We can only imagine he was someone's prized possession, as you surmise, a souvenir that brought back memories over the span of years. I treasure it for that reason, as their treasure, now in my home, and well cared for as they cared for him.

I love your horse! It is wonderful that you cherish it for its beauty as well as its history - even if we do not know the details!! It was obviously well loved. He is lucky to have found your home!!

Thanks for loving my horse, btrue! Yes, I do cherish him both for his beauty and his history, and I'm glad he's with me for both those reasons. :)
