I have in my possession a wonderful faded box of letters written by my grandfather to my grandmother well before they were considering being anyone's grandparents. I love that the only info required is my grandmother's name and town. The stamps are 2c. He uses a wax seal on each correspondence. His writing is very formal and he refers to her as his dear friend.

How wonderful to have these in such good condition. How did you get them?
    3. mareredware mareredware, 8 years ago
Yes, NevadaBlades, the handwriting is lovely. Unfortunately, I did not inherit that particular trait. ;) Gillian, the letters were passed down through my family. My parents kept so much. I have these which were written before my grandfather was in the service during WWI. I have wartime letters from WWII which my dad saved and letters from the Vietnam era from and to my brother. I've often thought it would be interesting to record the war letters...two very different wars, yet similar as seen through the eyes of my dad as a young man and my brother..
thanks for the loves to NevadaBlades, SpiritBear, Caperkid, fortapache, mikelv85, TassiedDevil, racer4four, and vertraio50. Always appreciated!

How wonderful it must be to have these in your possession!!! What a shame it is that the art of letter writing has long disappeared.

I agree, jscott. We have lost much with technology....gained as well, but I fear we've lost the intimacy of a well written letter and that is a shame.

These are really, really precious and wonderful! The letter is on its way to obsolescence, I am afraid. Nowadays, kids aren't even required to write in cursive in school. My 14 year-old knows how to write in cursive because I taught him, and I've tried to instill the love of letter writing and nice penmanship in by buying him a fountain pen and encouraging him to hand write thank you notes. (What are those, some may ask?)

Yes, betweenthelens, I agree and I truly believe that it was and is a far nicer means of communication than the instant texts of today. A well written letter is a joy to read. I still write three ladies each month. All three are in their 90s. I like the fact that you encourage your son to write.
thanks for loving the letters fortapache and Manikin!
