This came from an Estate where the owner had a large African collection. The owners had passed away 15 years before the estate came up for sale so I don't know much about the piece. From what I have found on perusing the internet I think it might be from the Mangati tribe or possibly the Iraqw tribe, but this is only from the photos online that I could find that looked similar. I am also only assuming it is a skirt, it could be a cape or some other clothing item. It is made entirely from calf skin with the hair on and also has the tail. What I especially like about the piece is the curled hairy strips that have been cut into the hide. It has different size glass beads and buttons in red, white and blue that decorate the waist and on various parts of the hide. It measures approximately 42 inches in length from the waist to the longest strip of hide and approximately 32 inches around the waist and 52 inches around the bottom of the skirt. It does have an old hide odor that isn't particularly pleasant.
If you can give me any more information on this piece it would be very much appreciated.
Thank You!
Put it in the African Artifact category.
Hi Celiene,
This is the first time I have used Collectors Weekly, and when I scrolled through the categories I couldn't fine any categories for African Artifact. Do I need to look under a particular section?
Thank you for your help!
Very nice ! Welcome to CW . My friend from Africa left yesterday so can't ask him but hopefully someone here can help you :-)
