    I was told this was an early Veterinary Tongue Holder,has anyone seen one before ?,its well made bobbin turned wood with metal fittings,and does grip well.

      It's a twitch, and is used to grip a horse's lip. If you do an image search on antique horse twitch you will see more of them.
