Hi, I have been passed a doll which I am trying to identify. On the head are the markings AMDEP, Made in Germany, 9. I have found that this is a doll made by Armand Marseille. I believe the 9 may be the mold number. Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Hi the 9 is mold size . There should be her mold number higher more under her hairline above the AM DEP . Can you check ?

Hi Manikin, thanks for the prompt reply. I have left the building now but will try and get back tomorrow to check. I know there was evidence of figures on the hairline but they were extremely difficult to see. I'll take a better camera and see if I can get a better photo. Many thanks.

Ok I will await your reply . She is a what we call a Dolly face bisque doll and is German made by Armand Marseille . How tall is she ? could it be numbers 1894 or are there 3 numbers

Hi Manikin, I'll let you know, but looking at the photo there does appear to be an 8 and a 9. From memory she would be roughly about 22 inches. Thank you.

Hi Manikin, I have attached 2 more photos. As you will see the number is heavily obscured by the hair. I think I can identify the 189 but the evidence on the 4 is inconclusive. The doll is about 24 inches long laid down, probably about 23 inches stood up. The doll is wearing a blue velvet dress, which I am guessing is contemporary. Many thanks, Neil.

Thanks for looking neil . I can not see the added photo clear but if you can make out 189 it is mold 1894 I am sure . That was one of AM numbers and is one of the most common to find . She is called a Socket head doll on a jointed composition body . She is a nice size for display .

Hi Manikin, that's great, thanks very much. Is it possible to give a date for manufacture of the doll? I understand the early doll bodies were bought in, is this one of those? Thanks again, Neil

AM did not make doll bodies and did buy them from other companies . Many companies sold bodies so would be hard to know which one they used as they likely used several companies . Several Doll companies just sold heads and would sell to other German Co . Your doll has the correct body for her and she dates 1900-1920.
Her hair is human hair and sparse but I would not replace it . I like to keep them original .

Hi Manikin, that's wonderful, thank you so much, you have been incredibly helpful. I know not to ask for a valuation here so but I don't suppose you know of any site where I could get a rough estimate please? All my thanks, Neil

Neil she does not have a real high price in today's market . In the 80's was hayday for bisque dolls and then internet drove prices down . She is not a rare doll or one made as a character face or a high quality doll French or German doll . If no cracks in head and in beautiful old clothes $75-150 appx

Hi Manikin, that's fine. We are a charity so that sort of figure is great for us. As far as I could see the head is undamaged, although the right hand has two missing fingers. Dress is blue velvet and showing signs of age but is complete. We have also been donated some other dolls so I may be back for more advice. Thank you again for your time and help. Best wishes, Neil

The fingers are not going to affect value much , these dolls are all about the heads :-) Glad to help anytime
