This is an old silouette which was a cheaper way of making a likeness of an image in the 17, 18, 19 centuries. I like this particular silouette due to the image it is of 3 kids dancing under a tree, not the normal image of a portrait silouette. The silouette is made from a velvet/silk type material not the usual paper. Item definately is old as the image has gone through the paper onto the back board due to being left in the sun, but this only adds to the appeal and has added to its charm not like what the sun does to old paintings. Anyway a really interesting image which makes for a very nice silouette. Came out of a box yesterday I have had 15yrs or so. It has a few minor faults and needs a clean due to minor water damage, but me personally I don't like anything perfect I would rather buy items which are loved as you can see the age in them. Is the image from a fairytale or one known to anyone?
Silhouettes come in and out of fashion as you say. There was another vogue for it around 1910. You see the same type of work on the glass of Friedrich Pietsch.
My grandmother loved them! I remember she had several in her room. I wish I had them:(
