Solid carved glass bird bought in Venice

We purchased this beautiful bird carved out of solid glass while vacationing in Italy in June, 2009. We can't remember the artist's name and haven't been able to find anything similar searching the internet. The bird weighs about 10 pounds and is approximately 13.5 inches long and 9.5 inches tall. We were told it was made by casting or molding the glass with many layers of different colors and then those colors were exposed by carving the "dimples" into the body of the bird. We paid about $5,000 for it at the time. We are hoping someone will know the name of the artist and any other information about it than can be provided.
