Elisabethan
(284 items)
Antique high relief shellcameo brooch of medusas head held by Perseus. It has an etched frame and tube hinge. The frame is not in mint condition but the cameo is.
I posted this in my Instagram (I have an acount for sharing not selling) and a collector told be he/she thought this quite an unusual cameo different from other medusa broches that person had seen. I don´t know if that´s the case as this is my very first cameo.
Would love coments with ideas and information about this brooch. I have not been able to find any marks.
More information: There is no signature that I can see, I have looked again. It's a small brooch only 3 x 3,5 cm. The cameo face stands out 1,8 cm from the base of the brooch and 1 cm from the highest part of the metallsetting.
Splendid first cameo, Elisabethan.
This high dome is rather unusual, and the expression is outstanding!
Sometimes back is faintly etched with a needle for the artist's signature...
Thankyou kyratango that nice to hear. I will examine it again to see what I can find.
Yes thankyou, lets hope so.

Greatful for help.
Love it! Once can see the craftmanship!!
Very nice work. Do I see some tiny marks between the tube hinge and the edge in pic 3?
Such a well-made and striking cameo Elizabeth! I love the backlit first pic!
Thankyou lentilka that nice to hear. Thankyou!
Davyd thankyou! I don't know if it is, I thought it was marks after the pin. But you're right it could be because it doesn't match the pin. I can't work it out even if it is a mark. That's a pritty.
Thankyou Rick! I'm glad I did ok with the photo.
I'm very happy about all the nice coments and love.

What a lovely cameo I love it!! ~ I dont mean any disrespect to this site as it's a favorite of mine but perhaps it may be worth you checking out the website cameo heaven & perhaps contacting the person behind it... she's got a lot of great info there including spotting fakes, cleaning, storage & has many high relief cameos in her collection including some Medusa ones. Could also try popping the image into google image search to see if any others come up. Best of Luck & Enjoy your lovely treasure!
Celestial 04072 thankyou very much! I will have a look at the website you mentioned. Great idea. Thanks again.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ELISABETHAN !!! ! !!!
Thankyou again vetraio :)!
Thankyou CindB for loving this.
She's wonderful! She is carved in helmet shell, using one of the 'horns', which allowed the carver to give her so much dimensionality. The simple T hinge & C clasp + long pin stem suggest this dates back a good way, 1860s - 70s. You can see a few of her sisters here:
