It is had a rough life, but after spending around eight decades in the elements, that is expected.
I believe this sign dates to around the 1930s, and measures about five feet by two feet. It is painted metal with a wood frame, and any more time outside, the paint would have washed away.
McClaren Rubber Co. was based in Charlotte, N.C., and came into existence when when J&D Rubber Co. changed hands and names in 1919. At this point, H.L. McClaren, former President of the Racine & Ajax Rubber Co., became president of McClaren Rubber Co.
In late 1935, the company was purchased by Dayton Rubber Co., and the molds for the tires continued to be used. Even as late as 1957 there were still references to Dayton-McClaren Tires, INC. in advertising. As for when the McClaren brand ceased, I am not sure.
When driving between towns, I always saw this sign hanging near the peak of a farm outbuilding. The property had been a rental for over a decade, and when it finally went up for sale, I inquired with the owner about buying the sign. It was always something I would look for when I drove by, now I have it inside to preserve and enjoy every day.
