Here's another hard-to-find piece of sheet music - this time from the Civil War. The title, "Battlecry of Freedom", may not be familiar by name, but if you watched Ken Burns' Civil War series on PBS, you know the tune - it was used throughout as background music.
First-printing examples of this and other popular period airs (Battle Hymn of the Republic, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, & etc) are hard to find because they (like this one) got played to death until the thin paper was in tatters and a new copy of the tune was purchased - with a different cover design.
"The Union Forever, Hurrah!, boys, Hurrah!
Down with the Traitor, Up with the Star
For we're marching to the field, boys, going t0 the fight
Shouting the Battle-cry of Freedom!"
