I have one of those from the 60's. I believe it is painted on bark.
This is known as an amate painting, a folk art from Mexico. It is done on a type of paper made from the bark of the ficus tree. The name comes from the Nahuatl "amatl" which means "paper." The process of making paper like this dates back to the pre-Columbian era, when it was used for ritual items and for the folded paper books containing the written records of Mayan history.
It wasn't until the 1960s, however, that people began making these distinctive paintings on amate paper, and selling them as tourist items. Early ones, like this one, featured birds or bunnies, with designs taken from the local pottery. traditions.
