I inherited this item from my paternal grandmother. I don't know how she acquired it. She loved to collect. The opening is about 4". It is about 3.75" tall. I believe the flowers are violets.

The mark on the bottom reads Gold Medal, St Louis, Owen Minerva

Do you know what this is or was used for? How old is it?

Lovely! Surely a sugar bowl, lacking the lid, part of a tea/coffee set :-)

It is larger than any sugar bowl we have ever seen.

      It is very pretty
Made by Edward J Owen in Ohio, Minerva is the pattern name .The company was in business from 1902-32. They must have won a Gold medal at the St Louis World's Fair.
It is the shape and form of a sugar bowl, it has the lip on the inside for a lid to sit. Some companies do make quite large sugar bowl.

There doesn’t seem to be much info on the company, or much on the market, so may be quite rare.
I got the info from marks4antiques, of which I’m a member
There was also a JB Owen in Zanesville, but don’t know if there related . There is a Zanesville pottery museum you could contact
