Today was my turn to work at the antique mall along with my fellow vendor Carol. These were hanging in her booth and I had been admiring them from day one. The price was a bit steep originally but today I noticed she had a "sale" tag hanging on them. So the price was right and I knew she would appreciate the sale since it's been a bit slow for us all. These are woodblock ink prints signed in pencil by the artist Wakyosai who was well known for his study of horses and they date to the Mid 20th century. They need a bit of updating mainly because the mattes are water stained and need replaced. I hope the prints aren't damaged too but it would be just the white borders that won't show anyway. I'll take them apart and check. I think a colored matte would look nice. Possibly red to pick up the color of the artist's seal. I'll check the craft stores in our area for some ready made ones. The black frames appear to be original compared to the ones I've seen on auction sites. They'll look great with just a little bit of TLC. -Mike-

I was told to reframe mine because the mattes aren't acid free.....which I still haven't done.
      Lovely by the way.....

Thanks melaniej for the "love" and compliment. That seems to be a problem with a lot of earlier art work but at least it's easily corrected. :)

Wonderful wood prints Mike, so in tune with yourAsian bent. I'm just a tad (!) jealous!

Thanks Karen... I'm in the process of redoing the mattes (acid free). I've got one finished. I choose red which goes well with the black frames. When I took them apart though I found all is glued to a crumbling pieces of heavy card stock. I was hoping to get rid of any acidic paper. The best I could do was place the new mattes over the whole thing and hope they don't deteriorate any further. It's a vast improvement appearance wise though. :)

Good work Mike. Can you post a finished photo? The red sounds like a great choice.
