This is a tintype of my great grandfather. He disappeared on March 24, 1888, near Rensselaer, IN, at the age of 36 and left a wife and six young children, including my grandmother who was five years old at the time. Apparently, he was on his way to Chicago to meet with some folks from the railroad. His overturned buckboard was found, but there was never any trace of his body or his horses. Several theories have evolved over the years as to why he disappeared. Some say he had enemies because he refused to sell his land to the railroad. Others speculate that someone killed him for a patent he had on improvements to the railroad coupler. I guess we'll never know......

One of my great grandfathers also disappeared on his way to work . Nothing was ever found of him and no one in the family ever heard from him again . He left a wife and two small children .

My great grandfather was murdered by cattle thieves in KY in the 1940s. At least, my relatives were able to track them down and see them convicted. To never know what happened! You have my sympathy.
