A while back I saw this Steven and Williams vase for sale but wasn't prepared to pay the price they were asking. Imagine my surprise and glee when one recently came up for auction. I was thrilled to get it at half the price of the other. It dates from 1887 and the pattern is a pulled loop or pull-up design. This technique was developed by S&W master glass innovator John Northwood who, in 1885, received a patent for his "pull-up" machine. It's a nice size measuring 8" h x 10" w x 6" w and I couldn't be happier.

Below, I've included a couple of pages from Keith Cummings' book, "A History of Glass Forming", which shows Northwoods' machine and an explanation as to how it was used. I've also posted a link to some other S&W glass, including mine.

      Oh yes, another stunner Rick.
There is so much to see and admire in this piece! The pulled loop design is exquisite, the ruffled rim and pulled down edges, the feet, and that incredibly contrasting pink. Swoon worthy.
Thanks for the links too - the machine is so interesting.

Wow, this is a beauty, Rick! I have always been fascinated by this pull up decor, and have never seen it on a stunning shape like this before!! I had no idea that a machine was involved in the patterning - I am going to have to read all about it! :)

Thank you for so much for the great comments and love Gary, Sylvia, Flea and Michelle. I always appreciate your guys stopping by, commenting or loving!

@ Michelle... I read about the machine in the book that I referenced above, and when I saw the example of the one that I bought, I was dying to own one. There's another one that I'm in love with, and hopefully one of these days I'll find one. It's the green with pink flowers matsu-no-ke style pull up on the page that shows all of the different Stevens and Williams pieces.
