Not American Indian. It's Mexican, a distinctive style made in the Toluca Valley of central Mexico, and popular souvenir items for years.

If you want to confirm, here is a link to the University of Washington's Burke Museum Online Database: http://www.burkemuseum.org/research-and-collections/culture/collections/database/browse.php?ID=191981

No Native American Indian tribe uses this particular combination of material, type of stitching (where the stitches are wrapped between the coils, leaving an open space), pictorial designs, and colors on their baskets. It's unique to Toluca Valley, making them instantly identifiable.

I think you may have solved a mystery for me, CanyonRoad, as I have a large basket with handle that looks woven in this style. Thank you for always sharing your expertise and knowledge with all of us here on CW.
