My great great grandfather, Carl Edward Arfwedson (1847-1913), officer of Svenska Livregementets Dragonkår. Photos from around 1890-95. Directly translated to: The Swedish Life Regiment Dragoon Corps. Wonder what the proper name of this would be in english? The regiment was a part of the royal cavalry. He has the title "Ryttmästare" in the photo with the helmet. The epaulettes have three stars and on the later photo, one star. Assuming he got promoted (and didn't loose two stars!). What counterpart would this be in US, Lieutenant Colonel or Major perahps?

I am making these comments as someone without particular knowledge of Swedish Regiments, but making assumptions based on typical 19th Century European military rank and structure. I wish I could write with more certainty.

I think the first photo was equivalent to a captain and the second photo a major, based on similar officer rank traditions in Europe. A Ryttmästare, I presume would be similar to the German "Rittmeister" (Riding Master), which was an officer rank in the cavalry, that I believe is equal to captain in other branches.

I think "Life Regiment, Dragoon Corps." or "Life Regiment, Corps of Dragoons." would be proper ways of expressing the name of the unit in English. We Yanks don't use these titles, so you might still get a confused look from an American, But the British should recognize the title.
