Japanese Wooden Base

I picked this up at the Alameda Flea Market today. the person i got it from thinks that it is some kind of wooden base - probably Japanese. it's very light - like balsa wood. it's very beautiful! definitely patinated, but you can see where it has split. doesn't bother me though, because i really like this piece.
