I am very excited by this find today at a junk shop in Berkeley. These are very elaborately carved ceiling brackets. not sure the exact name, but you see them used w/ vigas. i think that they are made from mahogany. where do you think they are from? i really have NO idea! they are approx 18 inches long.

These are really nice! Asian? Indonesian?

Wonderful! Could be large shelf brackets as well. Does look like stained oak rather than mahogany? A bit too light where it's worn for being mahogany. That style looks like late 1880-90, just a gut feeling... Great find!

Feels French or Spanish influenced rather than Asian..?

thanks Efes and OlofZ. i'm pretty sure that they are mahogany. you can see the grain more clearly in person. they could be Indian mahogany and possibly carved in Uttar Pradesh. Corbels often have fish designs in Hyderabad, from what i'm told - a Shia tradition.

i think 1880s-90s is correct, but i'm still baffled as to where they are from. the quality of the carving is spectacular!
