thanks mikelv and Efes! what is octagonal like this? i don't think of a fan as being octagonal, but anything is possible...

i think that's a lama they boy has, which would be very unusual. maybe it's an insert for a box or something like that. it shows a girl - dancing? for the emperor - two older servants bringing treats to the emperor, and a boy with a llama. i think the boy has Mongol clothes, so i guess it could be a horse, but it looks like a llama to me.

the headdresses may be a clue to what this is - along w/ the green clothes. probably just an official. this may have been the liner in an octagonal box.

It's got llama's ears for sure. Do you know if it's flimsy card stock, or is it a thicker material.

They did use octagonal shaped fans.

Very well preserved - I wonder how old this is?

thanks Gillian! it's made of something like tissue paper. it is a miracle that it has survived so well!

i found some writing on the back! just posted pics.

i heard from someone that the writing is a talisman - which is usually on the front. the object is to put over your door to keep away evil spirits. i am still very curious about the llama. can you see the cloven hooves? it's very clear. between those and the ears and the way the head is shortened and held high - it's a llama!

thanks Master. it is pretty unique! i'm convinced that it is a llama, but cannot find any info on it at all.
