I found this ring in the bough of an apple tree in an orchard in Kent, UK.
I'd love to find out whose it was, why it was placed there, or any information anyone may have on it.
It was removed from the tree by my sister, as it had grown into it. Sadly, she damaged it when she removed it.
My daughter believes it could be a sweetheart ring.
Any ideas would be very welcome.

Not a sweetheart ring. I think more like some sort of identification ring. Tonga is a place in Indonesia. Not sure what 23979085 means. Nothing of any interest pops up on the web. It's too bad the ring was broken, as there might have been more information printed on the inside of the band.

I just read an interesting article about thr Peruvian slave trade. Could it possibly be as efesgirl said an identification # Wow embedded in the apple tree? Would be neat to date the tree. This ones gona keep me awake:)

Another thought knowing the metal used would be helpful too.

Thanks guys. I don't think there was any more information inside. It looks like a name Tong.A. rather than the place name. Maybe the number is a service number, but I can't find it. I've messaged the forces war records to see if they know. As for the metal, without a kit to test it, I have no idea. It looks a copper colour underneath a flaked white metal covering, but is really very hard. Maybe it's a type of bronze?
But yeah, mainly I'd like to know the story behind it. :)

I see the name now - at first it looked like Tonga. Go buy a can of metal cleaner. That should remove quite a bit of the discoloration. The ring might have originally been silver plated.
