Its very well 200 years old. As I am told it may be a studio piece.
I encourage you to express your opinions
When I look at this from a distance it seems royal.
If memory serves wright. This type of silver is usually a wedding gift
wow! that's a beauty! i was going to say that it looks more like late 19th century, but his work is very similar to this, and your dating seems right. congratulations!
Hi,
There should be marks, as follows:
1. Assay office (London, leopard`s head, crowned or uncrowned, depending on the year)
2. Lion passant for sterling
3. Date letter
4. Duty mark (sovereign head in profile)
5. Maker`s mark
Digby Scott & Benjamin Smith (beginning of XIX cetury)
Benjamin Smith II
(Registered Oct 1812 and 1814, 1818 & 1822)
Benjamin Smith III
Son of Benjamin Smith II, died 1850
(Registered May 1822, Dec 1837)
Show us close up of marks, please, there is option for three more pictures.
Btw. the marks were not optional. Making and selling silver without paying duty and without proper marks would have sent silversmiths to prison. In a word, search for marks (on the lid, too).
