wooden tool identification help?

I found this at a garage sale today, while it looks like a simple door pull, I'm certain that is not what it is due to the wear on on the interior. It looks to me to be a tool for something, I just don't know what. It has no holes that would indicate it was ever a door pull. It is a beautiful piece of wood. I was told it may have been a piece for use in tanning hides, but they were not sure.
