    i bought this bronze plaque today at a salvage place. can anyone tell me how old it is and where it's from and what it's for? i'm ignorant!

      about 5.5 inches across.

      Could possibly be a pedestal for a small Buddhist bell (called SUZU in Japanese). An elaborately padded cushion would be placed directly on the pedestal, then the bell upon the cushion. A small, wooden carved mallet would be used to strike the bell at the conclusion of a Buddhist chant. If you go online and type in 'Japanese Buddhist Bell Stand', you can see examples of what I'm trying to describe. [;>)

      thank you NevadaBlades. it does look like some of the more baroque pieces i've seen from Tibet. i did some research on it today and i think that this piece is very special. it's really incredibly beautifully made. i think it's italian, and maybe from the early 19th century or earlier.
