The person in Japan I bought this from said the goatee was put on with ink. That seems odd, doesn't it?
      Thanks for love,jscott0363!!

Did the seller mention WHO inked in the goatee and WHY??? This is a very interesting and intriguing photo.....

KAMAKURA is my wife's hometown ~ that's where we first lived when we went (back) to Japan (we later moved 2 train stations away to KONANDAI, a suburb of YOKOHAMA).

KAMAKURA was the capitol of Japan for almost 200 years, when the SHOGUNS were in power, during the KAMAKURA JIDAI (Kamakura period). There are many ancient temples and shrines in KAMAKURA. The world-famous DAI-BUTSU (giant bronze seated Buddha) is also located in KAMAKURA. [;>)

Maybe I'll ask the guy ( he has an American or English name) if he has more and older photos for sale. No, he didn't say why the dog's owner's goatee was inked on. Maybe he is in disguise for some reason. Maybe the addition of glasses was part of it. When I happen to glance quickly at the photo, I imagine I see a boy in my mind's eye...not a grown man at all. Do you see that at all? Is that just my imagination playing tricks. I also love that he thinks so much of his fine animal that it shares the photo with him. I don't seem to recall any Japanese photo on eBay of a pet in the photo, and I HAD to have it. The dog's paws seem bigger than the man's hands.
Remember it is 1941. Probably before your time, huh?
I am happy that this photo is from a place you know. Small world. isn't it? Do you have fond memories there? Are the historic places

      Still there?

Well, the person's clothes suggest that he's an adult ~ a young man ~ and not a boy. Why anyone would want or feel the need to draw a goatee on the young man is beyond my reckoning. Are you certain that it's a fake goatee and not genuine? It's impossible for me to say by examining your photo of the photo whether or not the original photograph was doctored. I would need to examine the original photo with a high-power magnifying glass and even lightly run my finger(s) across the man's chin area to see if I can feel the ink. But I think the real question is, why would anyone do that? If the young man had wanted to disguise himself, even going to the trouble of wearing eyeglasses which are either fake or don't belong to him, as you wonder might be a possibility, then I think it would have been a lot easier and smarter for the man to also wear a fake goatee instead of drawing a fake one directly on the photograph, don't you think so, too? But without being able to examine the original photo,.......

It is indeed a small world, but not because this young Japanese man in 1941 and I forty years later lived in Kamakura....... Have I got a spooky, Twilight Zone story to tell you that really happened to me! If you want to hear it???

All of the historical places in Kamakura are still there, even after more than 500 years, and yes, I have very fond memories of our years there. But that's another story..... [;>)
