Something I picked up in one of the Bakersfield antique malls. This is a .50 caliber ammo can for the M2 machine gun aka the Ma Deuce.
These ammo cans much less common than the smooth sided, stenciled ammo cans found at army surplus stores.
This one is embossed with the information as to what gun it was intended and bullets on top. One on end is the flaming bomb arsenal mark. Also it opens from the front instead of the side like the more common version.
I have both versions side by side in the last photo.
When I was a kid growing up in San Jose, CA, I used to go to the Army Surplus store in downtown all the time. As an 8-year-old, I rode the 5-plus miles from home to downtown on my J.C. Higgins bike. I haven't been downtown in San Jose since 1988...... not sure if they still even have an Army surplus store there. Back then, in the '50s, an 8-year-old kid could afford to buy an authentic WWII helmet. Now, they cost an arm and a leg. 100 buck$ or more. Way, way out of the reach of kids today....... Sad. :</
Thank you very much NevadaBlades. I used to get good stuff at surplus stores in the late 70s. Not so much anymore.
