This exquisite little knife was found in an antique shop yesterday, and it was rusty as heck and cruddy when I found it.
I spent an hour or so cleaning the 1 1/2 inch carbon blade and nail file the best I could, and polishing the scales and buffer. Then I nourished the tortoiseshell with some hand cream to give it some life-giving moisturising!
It measures 2 inches closed, and 4 3/4 open. The nail file/cleaner has a different grade of file either side, and the cleaning point is very sharp, so care would need to be taken when removing that dirt from under your nails...
The buffer is made from bone, and has been scored in a crosshatch design lightly to aid it's buffing power. It is backed by another thin sheet of tortoiseshell, as can be seen.
Not sure if real or faux shell, but I have seen some on the web that are supposedly real that look very similar to this, from the Victorian era.
Then again, some late Georgian ones are said to be faux, so who knows?
