    I"m not sure what century this lamp 36" hanging from ceiling & 16" wide 18, 19, 0r 20th century?
I would assume it was used as a ceiling hanging lamp burning oil or kerosene. It was recently converted to electricity, I do not know the date of the conversion but it still works fine. There is an on and off switch under the large glass dome, the brass pot that once held oil or kerosene now supports another bulb that may be turned on or off by a wall switch. The wall switch can also turn them all on or all off at once.
This item was picked up at one of the many flea markets as I drove thru Florida. the lamp required some tender loving care and new glass dome otherwise it worked fine. In my younger days living in Connecticut I was impressed by many of our friends who kept the standards of century old homes in their original decor, the lamp I'm displaying are one example.

Are you sure that this lamp was ever an Oil/Kerosene hanging lamp? I don't recognize any parts that have been modified except for the wire connection/location on the gallery. I have never seen a chain hanging from the shade holder that connects to the filler cap before. What keeps the font from falling out of the font holder? A picture of the inside of the gallery will confirm whether it was ever an oil lamp. RER

I'm sure this particular lamp was bacterized many times and perhaps parts were interchanged to fit the gallery. Seriously, I have no idea why a bulb was installed into the font as it creates a tremendous amount of heat in a brass enclosure? however it recalls earlier times and fits well into any Victorian décor. Obviously it is not meant for the collectors eye .
