When I saw the auction for this brooch, I thought the enamel may be Charles Fleetwood Varley.

Now I have it in hand, I'm not sure...

The surface is uneven, and it doesn't looks Varley's quality...

What do you think, Arts and Crafts era specialists?

It is marked TLM for Thomas L.Mott, well known for his butterfly wings jewellery!

    Size: 3.6cm or 1.7/16"

Judy, so many thanks for your interesting link to Shipton!!!
Your last link too, it is a painted miniature, it seems TLM made several scenics in this medium. Enamels seem scarcer from what I saw on the Images search :-)

      Jean, yes!

Many thanks for your lovely visit, Mike, Marga, Davyd, LovelyPat, Karen and Rick!

Hi Pascale, the Shipton name is getting around isn't it! I was looking at a bfly wing pendant on ebay, wondering why it was listed as Shipton when the only marking on it was a pattern number 202213 Sterling England!! This lead me to that article........amazing isn't it!!

Sorry Kyra. Don't think this is a Varley one.
    18. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Judy, you are a clever detective :-))

Jewels1900, don't be sorry! I thought it wasn't when I got it in hand :-)
Thank you for stopping and confirmation!

Many thanks for your visit and love, Freiheit, Sean, NevadaBlades and Poire!

I know absolutely nothing about these makers but can tell you what is depicted because it is a common subject on cameos that are souvenirs of Naples:

      http://cameotimes.com/index.php/profiles-1/miscellaneous/mt-vesuvius
    20. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Thank you very much, Cameosleuth! I was thinking a mount in Great Britain, with a moor in foresight, but you may be right with mount Vesuvius :-)
    21. cameosleuth cameosleuth, 8 years ago
The addition of tussocks is rather strange & they do suggest a moor, but the outline of the double cones of Vesuvius is very distinctive. It may be a fantasy landscape inspired by the view over the Bay of Naples. :)
    22. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Yep, you're right, probably a fantasy landscape, artist view :-)
