A pair of Welz Iridescent Swirl vases. I believe this decor hasn't been recorded to date on this Welz shape, so to have a pair is pretty good going. Unusually both these pieces are gold painted/enameled on the inside and the minor chips you can see on the lip edges are chips to this 'paint'.

I have my suspicion that this is a post-production addition, maybe by a retailer (just to fancy them up a bit more - like they needed it!!!!?) or a previous owner. It is clear that these vases do have the applied black rim under this paint. By applying a strong light through the glass you can see the broad brushstrokes. So question is, do I get the paint stripper out???

Thanks to Craig for confirming Welz id.

I think I would return them to their original splendor. The gold looks dirty and tacky. I really like them...they're special. Bob

This is a tough one...... Tough to tell without them in hand, but the paint seems like an add to me. With the kind of soiled look to the gold, I would be tempted to remove it myself.

If doing so, I would start with the one on the bottom of the stacked pair pic, and if revealing a good result, then try the other. It is always possible that it was added later to cover interior issues with the glass.

The one on the top is not only new to this shape, but a new variant of the decor I have not seen before.....

I have used an industry solvent (Stripit) to good effect on stubborn household paint, bad nicotine staining and just bad grime when cleaning some pretty delicate items. I usually test it on a corner with a cotton bud first - I suspect that this won't be a later addition but original and you could test this way. Modern laquers and enamel paints will come off whereas originals won't.
      I use a Q-tip/cotton bud amount first.

Thanks Craig ... I'll proceed with caution and perhaps re-post next week with results.

Try an area at the bottom center interior first, and see if the glass is damaged underneath it. if so, you do not have to go all the way and it will not really show...... Just a thought....

Oh these are gorgeous!! I actually kind of like the gold on these - it adds a certain splendor, even if it is aged. Yes..I think I like it! ;)

WOW, incredible!! I think this shape is one of the popular with Welz. the gold looks unique but not origenal. I have a kralik caged piece with a red (lead paint) cage. I decided not to remove it because it could have been done by the retailer - this to me is part of the making process... I would say just strip one of them but then i cant decide witch one you should do!?!?

Thomas needs one, he has like 8 and plays with them, stacks them, does photoshoots- puts googly eyes on them etc... LOL

bellísimo, you know old ink get much solid with time becaus monomers go on with the covalent binding so perhaps removing with a chemical agent is difficult, and looking for a place to unstuck or peel it off would be a way for me
