"Devilbiss" Perfume Atomizer/Gold Mercury Crackle Glass/Silver and Moonstone Cabachon Top /Circa 1940-50's

I spent some time at the antique co-op today straightening up and thinking about what to do about Christmas decorations for the booth. For me it's too early but other people are decorating already. They haven't even taken the Halloween stuff down and they're putting up the tree next week ! Thanksgiving just becomes an after thought. Every year it starts earlier and earlier. Yes, I'm a bit of a Scrooge but that comes from working retail most of my life and dealing with the horde. So taking a break and walking around, I noticed this perfume bottle was no longer locked in it's case along with a couple others just sitting on top. They were also marked down... so that's why. This one had caught my eye from day one. Love the shape, color and the Moonstone top. Almost positive it's Devilbiss. They made their own metal accessories but they commissioned the glass bottles from the finest glass makers in the world, such as Steuben, Tiffin, Quezal, Durand, Daum, Murano, and many more. I won't venture a guess as to who made this, but I think the gold mercury crackle glass in this squat shape is beautiful. The top I've seen on other Devilbiss bottles so that's my case for this attribution. The top seems like silver or more likely nickle and polished up nicely. Not sure if this is a real Moonstone but it's the icing on the cake. No paper labels or marks left anywhere. The poor bulb is all dry rotted and the netting is unraveling. I'm pretty sure it can be replaced and then it would be fully functional again. -Mike-

The bottles are actually double walled glass where silver nitrate has been poured inside. Most have silvertone fittings; some have a gold crackle appearance, made by the same process using amber glass. The amber bottles had a paper label "DV Gold Plate, Made in U.S.A." Very popular in the 1940's-50's and becoming highly collectible again. Most with paper labels "DeVilbiss, Made in U.S.A." and a model number referring to the shape. Some also have paper labels stating "Hand-Blown Glass" and "No F.E. Tax."
