    Hello CW friends!!

Our CW friend TassieDevil (Judy) inspired me to re-post my antique mantel clock. My wife and sons knew I'd been admiring it for quite a while and gifted me with it for Fathers' Day a few years ago.

Thanks to our CW friend Bruce99, I now know this is a 1917 "Engelwood" mantel clock manufactured by the Waterbury Clock Company, of Waterbury, CT.

The clock operates quite well and keeps near perfect time (after a tedious calibration of the pendulum). I believe this is referred to as an 8 day clock. Not sure about that. I just know that, as a rule of thumb, I wind it about every every 6 days.

Talk about a loud clock. This one chimes once on the half hour and gongs (loudly) every hour. If it's 12:00 o'clock it gongs 12 times, 1:00 o'clock 1 time and so on and so on. We've now became accustomed to the loud gonging and hardly notice it any longer.

The entire clock measures 11 1/2" tall, 9" wide base and 4 5/8" deep. The clock face measures approximately 8 1/2" top to bottom and 6 1/2" wide. The clock dial measures 4 1/2" in diameter.

The internal workings appear to be original to the clock, but I'm certain that the pendulum is not.

    Thanks for looking!!

Mystery solved: A VERY special thank you goes out to our CW friend Bruce99 for identifying this clock for me. Many many thanks Bruce!!!

    Scott

Love clocks in general Scott but I agree the coiled gongs can be a bit harsh. I put a thin piece of felt on the surface of the hammer on the ones I have. This gives a nice mellow sound to the strikes and really takes the edge off without any harm to the clock at all . :)

      Hello Scott,

It looks like you have a model called the "Englewood" manufactured by the Waterbury Clock Company. It's from circa 1917. Here's another example on the web: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1917-waterbury-englewood-mantel-clock-404353920

      Thanks Judy!!
Yes, Bruce did a fantastic job of identifying this clock for me. I had always wondered about it's age. I do love this clock and I was very surprised when it was presented to me for Fathers' Day a few years ago. I love the way it ticks loudly, but can do without the loud gonging:)

I too love clocks Scott, and yours is great! The thing about the gongs, rings, cukoos etc., is it eventually get used to it and don't even hear it :-)

A prize to really admire.... Will become a "Family Heirloom", make a note to tell the story of how and when you got, place inside the clock, 100 years from now you great-great grandchildren can share the joy.
