I stopped into our local Salvation Army the other day. This isn't the big modern one I usually go to and it's much older too. They just started a very odd way of selling everything....by the pound. Nothing has an individual price. All clothes are $1.49 a lb. and everything else is .49 cents a lb. except furniture. I found a nice brass foyer light fixture and this planter...total cost for both $9.18 ! I figured they both weighed about the same as this 10" planter is heavy Majolica so about 5 lbs. each. It's just beautiful in detail and color but man it's had a rough life. Hairline cracks galore which made me hesitate buying it but even so I just had to rescue it. I knew I'd kick myself later if I left it behind. The cracks are not really that visible except on the interior but I don't know what's holding this piece together ! Very Della Robbia in style, it has eight sides with bas-relief of Roman Putti playing instruments and one panel has Latin text incised into it. I tried to get a clear enough picture so if anyone is able to translate it that would be great. Some glaze damage on the the high spots of the putti have caused dark spots to the white ceramic. No maker's marks or labels anywhere. Possibly Italian or even French. Still. it's amazing to look at despite it's flaws. -Mike-

It is beautiful, I would have rescued it too! It definitely looks well made, but I don’t know any Latin, so can’t help there. I would have thought all Salvation Army stores would have been consistent in their pricing methods, but this saves time with a pricing gun!!!

What an odd way to sell stuff! Do they have scales like in the produce department in supermarkets so you can weigh things to know how much they'll cost before being rung up by the cashier???

Thanks MaryH....I guess it's a test store to see how well this method works.

Very interesting planter. I hope you will find info about it. Strange method of pricing. Not bad for the buyer!!! In that way little items, like jewellery will cost you maybe couple of cents.

They have two large flat counter scales that have a clear plastic storage containers similar to the one that you used to make the litter box Kiyoshi. They just put everything you buy in there and weigh it. Some things have old price tags on them but they just disregard them. The brass hanging light fixture I bought had $7.98 tag but the planter wasn't priced. Together they weighed about 8 lbs. so $9.18 with tax for both. Definitely a bargain there ! :)

Thanks Martika.... I was explaining in the previous comment to Kiyoshi (Nevada Blades) exactly how the do things. It is strange but you're right I have bought jewelry for a few cents when they have it which isn't often. Plus they give away free bake goods donated by "Panera" on Saturday . They can't sell them after a few day because they don't have preservatives. So rather than throw them out they donate then to the store. To shopping carts full ! You just get two clean bags (one for your hand) and take what ever and how much you want from whole loaves of bread to bagels which are my favorite. I was told they still have to throw any leftovers away at the end of the day. It freezes well too I've used bread from a month before and it was still delicious ! :)
